Reforestation and afforestation in France
Although the surface area of French forests has been increasing over the past century, climate hazards are compromising their health. The number of dead trees has accelerated in recent years, not only due to the increasing frequency of storms and forest fires, but also because of prolonged and intensified droughts. These conditions weaken the trees, making them more vulnerable to the spread of bio-aggressors. As a result, the quality of forest habitats for both flora and fauna is deteriorating, along with the forests' ability to sequester carbon. Estimates over the past decade show that their CO2e storage capacity has been halved.
